The top picture is of new Senator-elect Richard Burr (left) with state Congressman, Fred Smith. Richard Burr won John Edwards' Senate seat. The pictures above were taken at the rally for Richard Burr that I attended and wrote about a couple of weeks ago. They are courtesy of James Exum, Exum's Photography, Princeton, NC (919/965-3527, jexumjr@ncrr.com). My favorite is the bottom picture of Burr with Jesse Helms. Many outside of North Carolina never understood how Jesse got re-elected time and time again. Those of us here know why. Helms' constituent services were second to none and even when you didn't agree with Jesse, you always knew where he stood and knew he would stand his ground. There will never be another Jesse Helms, but I hope that Richard Burr seeks to emulate at least some of those characteristics.

Thank you for all your work on your blogs for this election.

Lorie, I loved Sen. Helms and if I'd been a NC resident, he'd have had my vote!!!! I definitely can see why he was continuously reelected. My dad just thought the world of him.

I can only hope that Sen. Elect Burr can put NC first and follow in the footsteps of Sens Ervin and Helms. As a congressman his district suffered, he was the only congressman in his freshman class to LOOSE funding for his district. While running for congress (the 1994 revolution) he spoke of limiting PAC money. However each cycle while a congressman he took more than 25%, his self imposed limit, for special interest. http://www.opensecrets.org/ Why I ask? Secondly how can he claim to be one of us? When elected to congress his net worth was around 200.000, now he is worth 4 million, how do you become a millionaire serving the people. Thirdly he drives a $40,000.00 + Acura and Mrs. Burr drives a $50,000.00 plus BMW x5. Next I attended public school my entire life, I am a believer in our schools. I pose this question to Sen. Elect Burr why do you send you children to private school. I could understand a religious reason, parochial or Christian schools, but the school you sons attend(ed) cost $13,000.00 per year. 13,275 http://www.fcds.org/admission/tuition.asp so congratulations to the state of North Carolina and to Sen. Elect Burr. I hope during your tenure you can spend your time putting North Carolina first by helping our schools, or laid off textile workers, our children, fighting crime, protecting the environment, and going to sleep every night knowing that you put North Carolina first. It is of great concern that you may spend your time working on decisive wedge issues such as gay marriage, abortion, and medical liability that the national political ideologs have scared us with. I hope that you remember that you are a North Carolinian, father, and husband first! And a republican second! Best of Luck Sen. Elect Burr.
