Katie Newmark wrote a wonderful tribute to her mother, who also happened to be her French teacher for three years. Katie points readers to her super blogger mom's piece on how history should be taught. What a shame there aren't more Betsy Newmarks in the schools. (I didn't know that Betsy speaks French. Maybe I can get her to tell me how you say "surrender monkey" in French.)

As a home schooling mom, reading Katie's accolades for her mom has given me an inferiority complex. Way to go Betsy! Thanks for the inspiration.

Systran assures me with great confidence — bordering on arrogance, really, the little snot — that the phrase you're looking for is "singe de reddition." The verb "rendre" has lots of meanings, though, from "to turn in" (as in homework) to "to vomit." So who the hell knows.
