This is a recipe from my mother-in-law for a breakfast treat that my husband enjoyed growing up in Oklahoma. I had never heard of chocolate gravy before I met him, but have since found similar recipes in at least one cookbook. This is actually a chocolate sauce that can also be put on other foods, but the way it is meant to be eaten is as a gravy on biscuits. My husband ate it on what he calls "bop" biscuits, the kind you buy in a tube and bop on the counter to pop the cardboard tube open. He tears the biscuits up into bite-size pieces in a bowl and pours the gravy over them. It is a delicious, if sinfully sweet, breakfast treat. Do not plan to serve it without plenty of milk to drink along with it.
Chocolate Gravy
2 Tablespoons (heaping) cocoa
2 cups milk
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 Tablespoons (slightly rounded) flour
1 Teaspoon vanilla
Butter
shake of salt
Mix together all but milk in medium saucepan. Add enough milk to make paste. Stir in remaining milk (a little at a time) until smooth. Cook on medium until bubbling and gravy thickens. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla and a few pats of butter to taste.

This is great. My family has had this for breakfast since I was born. Only we make it in a skillet and serve it over cathead biscuits with lots of butter and it is definitely gravy on top.

I am so happy that I found this recepie. I have always told my husband about the Chocolate Gravy my grandmothers made me as a child, but he never believed me, now he does. I have for many years asked my mother how my grandmother's made it, and all she could remember is a pinch of this and a little of that. My grandmothers came the area's of Oklahoma and Arkansas, and I wish now that I had learned more about the awesome dishes that they made special for me and my brother and sisters. OH! do I remember the homemade melt in your mouth biscits, that you pour the Chocolate Gravy over with a dollip of real butter.

I found this article while looking for the recipe for chocolate gravy to brush up on how to make it. I learned a long time ago from my grandmother, now deceased. She cooked it for us as a child and I in turned cooked it for my children growing up. They are coming with their husbands and my one grandchild Thanksgiving eve and they ask me to cook it for their breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. They say it is one of their fondest memories growing up, it just so happens it was also one of mine growing up. I once found it under the name of choctaw chocolate gravy while doing family research. My grandmother and great grandmother were part choctaw.

I am so glad I found this site. I am expecting and I woke up this morning with a craving for a perfect breakfest treat that I haven't eaten since I was a child. My best friends grandmother would make it for us on the weekends that we would spend the night with her. I thought it was a forgotten art.

Thank You so very much for posting this recipe!!! My Grandmother and Aunt used to make chocolate gravy for us in Science Hill Kentucky. They made it for a special breakfast treat for us kids. It was one of the fondest memories of family gatherings for us children. We had it over bisquits made from scratch. What wonderful memories this will make for generations to come for many families!!! I now make it in Oklahoma for my grandchildren!!!

Does anyone know where chocolate gravy came from, where it originated? Is it German, Dutch, Enlish, American Indian? I definitely know what it is and love it!

I just had Chocolate Gravy this morning. My sister made it for me, because it had been since I was a young child that I had it last. Delicious and chaulked full of good memories. Great morning I must say. Good to know more people are aware of this delight. Whenever mentioning it over the years; often garnered strange looks.

I was so happy to find this recipe, I lived in Stidham OK when I was in grade school. I thought it was the greatest when our neighbor Nadine would let me & my brother come over and have chocolate gravy & biscuits with her and her kids.
