I am already addicted to the new series, Supernatural. I knew I was going to like it when one of the two brothers called the other one "Bitch" last week in the series premiere. It was not because I am fond of profanity, but because the exchange came across as completely natural true-to-life brotherly banter (in a teasing, taunting, aggrevate the heck out of each other kinda way).
I have always loved scary movies and television series and mysteries. I was a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock movies, The Twilight Zone and The Nightstalker as a child. This show captures the best of the mystery and horror genres.
The main characters, so far the only characters who have appeared in both episodes, are two brothers whose mother was killed in their house when they were young children. She was killed in a bizarre manner by an unseen force. Their father spent the rest of his life hunting for whatever it was that killed her and taught his sons to do the same. The younger brother, who was an infant when his mother was killed, left home, went to college, got a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend and was preparing for an upcoming law school admission interview when the older brother paid a visit in the middle of the night. He told the younger brother that dad had gone missing and he needed help tracking him down. Younger brother agreed, but needed to be back in time for his interview. (I am sure you all can see where this is going.)
The two went off in search of dad. They found the hotel where he had been staying, clippings from the strange phenomenon he had been investigating (a woman in white that killed travelers on a dark stretch of road in a small town), and his journal. They solve the mystery of the woman in white and resolve her unfinished business therefore vanquishing her ghost. Anyway, they get clues as to where dad headed, but the younger brother goes back to school for his interview. Unfortunately when he gets there, he finds something (that I won't reveal here) that convinces him to forego the interview and help big brother search for dad. They take off in big brother's cool old car listening to old cassette tapes.
That was all in the premiere episode. Tonight they tracked a Wendigo, which is a cross between a werewolf, an ogre, Big Foot and a gizzly bear on speed. Oh, and did I mention that the creature could mimic human voices and possessed incredible intelligence? The show has a bit of an X-files quality to it, but does not take itself quite so seriously and does not shoot every scene in the dark. The relationship between the two brothers is extremely believable. And they are pretty darn adorable to boot. If the rest of the episodes are anything like the first two then I will be watching this one religiously. "Supernatural" is on the WB network, Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m. Please give it a try and tell all your friends about it, too. I really don't want this one to get the ax.
