I just saw a promo for an Anderson Cooper special tonight. It is about the Katrina one year anniversary. The name of the program is "Keeping Them Honest." I am not making this up. I don't know who "them" is, but I assume it is "the government." I don't know if it is ironic for one of the journalists who sowed seeds of panic and spread misinformation following the storm to talk about keeping anyone else honest or if it is just ridiculous. It is probably both.

Government comprises both Democrats and Republicans, and emergency services agencies have been around for many years and shaped by both Democratic and Republican politicians, management and budgeting. Both parties should take a great deal of responsibility for failure to deliver emergency services as well as needed. These services need to work well because a major event of mass terrorism or a hostile nation such as North Korea or Iran could launch missiles at American cities in the future unless contained and controlled. The failures of emergency services during the Katrina disaster need to serve as a warning to improve these services in the event of an even worse disaster whether that be from nature, terrorism or war.

so much of the coverage reminds me of the Wellstone Memorial...
overt, misguided, bitter, political manipulation...
