Just a note of thanks to those who use the Amazon buttons in the sidebar to purchase books, CDs, DVDs and other products from Amazon. A small percentage of each purchase is sent to me periodically in the form of an Amazon gift certificate, which makes it possible for me to get a couple of free books a year. I often forget the Amazon box is there until I receive the gift certificate by email. Thanks so much!

Lorie,I wish I could have gotten such a deal on the 12 disc CD/DVD boxset of The Doors last December. A bit pricey, but a classic boxset of unreleased material, concert footage, and all six studio albums remixed into beautiful Dolby 5.1 DVD audio.
I also bought some pretty good unreleased material Canned Heat cds and the rotten new Weird Al album were my other recent cd purchases. Bought some classic SCI FI DVDS as well. Fritz Lang's 1927 silent classic METROPOLIS sure is a great classic.
Lorie, have you acquired or purchased any recent cds, DVDS or books that you can recommend? Any readers here have any new recommendations on cds, DVDs or books?

We mostly purchase kid movies, but my husband and I bought The Guardian last week and loved it. It is the movie with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutchner about the Coast Guard rescue swimmers. I recommend it highly. It is like Top Gun, but much better because it doesn't have the extended Kelly McGillis love story and the Danger Zone/You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin' song segments.
The story has compelling, and very human, characters and makes you realize how much those who put their lives on the line to save others sacrifice to do it.
As for family DVDs we have bought the past year, I really liked Sky High and Cars.
I bought the new Chris Daughtry CD and am enjoying it.
I have had it for a while now, but still love and play often several country CDs purchased over the past 12 - 18 months -- Little Big Town, Sugarland and Carrie Underwood. All three not only have a good selection of songs, but now they have all proved to be big hits as well, with each boasting multiple top ten (and some number one) singles.

Lorie, glad to hear a good recommendation on THE GUARDIAN. Some reviews of it left me wondering whether to rent it or not. Maybe some reviewers couldn't get past Ashton Kuthcher for some reason, and were a bit biased.
CARS does look pretty good too. I never could figure why the headlights were not the eyes though. I always thought cars look like they have a face with a mouth and eyes already, and the artist's interpretation in CARS seemed a little strange to me at first. But the animation storyline and voices look very impressive.
I do like some country acts very much, but many like Hank Williams Jr. and John Anderson who unfortunately don't chart very much any longer. I'm probably more of an old rocker at heart though, and like a lot of the Woodstock era stuff like Hendrix, The Doors, but some 70's stuff like T.Rex a lot too. I used to be a huge singles fan, and miss the way these aren't as available as they used to be. Many English 45rpm record singles had two songs on the flip side, usually one unreleased one and one from the album. I think Shania Twain had about 5 singles off one album, maybe an all time record.
I'm super sorry I bought the latest Weird Al album, STRAIGHT OUT OF LINWOOD. It's nowhere near as fun or well written like his old stuff. And even the DVD videos and 5.1 DVD sound doesn't help the weak content very much. It's his first album that was completely a dud that I've ever heard. Some of his old stuff like the parody of Dire Straits' MONEY FOR NOTHING done as BEVERLY HILLBILLIES with a great music video were genius compared to this LINWOOD turkey album.
When I was under 50, NBC had me on a TV show recommendation internet survey board, but dropped me after I turned 50 because they only sought the 18-49 demographic group. For some reason some in the entertainment industry don't believe that persons over 50 watch TV, or buy DVDs or cds, and just look for Geritol, a rocking chair and AARP ads. I love entertainment and always like to hear what's a great item in DVDs, cds or books.
Glad to hear a few good recommendations on good stuff, and hope a few others here volunteer some good DVDs, cds, books, etc, as well. I Couldn't log into blogger today due to a technical problem there, so I spent a little time on a few of my favorite websites today instead. Thanks for your recommendations.
C'mon folks share a few good DVDs, cds, movies, books, etc.

The country group Little Big Town has a Fleetwood Mac sound. It is a group with male and female vocals and the result is wonderful.
I am a big southern rock fan. Montgomery Gentry's Greatest Hits is probably some of the best country/southern music comparable to Hank, Jr. and Jon Anderson that I can think of. That greatest hits CD is excellent. The girls and I wore that one out in the fall. We have not listened to it in a while because it ended up in my husband's truck. The Christmas song on that CD is hilarious. The first line of it goes, "Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk, at our Christmas party..." Read the lyrics. They are laugh out loud funny, but even better when you hear them sung.

Lorie, Fleetwood Mac is a good way to sound for a group.I'll have to check out Montgomery Gentry because that sounds like the country sound I enjoy.
You need to burn a second copy of those cds for your home use, Lorie, on your cd burner or even on cassette. Compilation cds of your favorite songs or artists for your home use are great too. I've got about 200 T.Rex cds including rarities albums, bootlegs, audition tapes, demos, etc. and need to compile something to listen to that comprises the best of these nearly 200 cds in some fashion to easily carry around when I work at home. GOLDMINE Magazine had a detailed discography, so I should make a chronological two or three cd compilation of the best of these items.
Don't forget a new MONK tonight. Only three more episodes after tonight left in this 16 episode season until early July starts the new season. The DVD of this season should be out in a few weeks after the last episode airs. Last week's MONK drew 5.0 million viewers according to the ratings. Very good for a cable program. But PSYCH faired slightly less well at 3.7 million, but still a knockout ratings number for a cable program.
CASINO ROYALE reportedly comes out on DVD in early March. Daniel Craig was surprising effective in this 999th episode of the forever ongoing James Bond franchise series.
Courteney Cox's new FX series, DIRT, is in a bit of a ratings slump down a full 50% to 1.9 million viewers from the premiere. Courteney Cox plays a very value challenged scandal magazine editor using a pathetic functional schizophrenic photographer to catch celebrities in very comprising situations. An absolutely outrageous cable series with Courteney Cox about as twisted and unFRIENDSlike as you could possiby imagine. Very controversial series, yet amusingly bad enough to watch and chuckle at the sheer comic decadence of it all. Courteney Cox reminds me of the over-the-top wickedly bad performance of Faye Dunaway in MOMMIE DEAREST for some reason in this outrageous FX series. Even guest star, Wayne Brady took a giant step toward shedding his image as the very nice ocean cruise ship entertainer with his most evil role yet last week. The series likely won't be renewed for next season, so you need to catch this weird trainwreck before it's gone forever. Courteney Cox sure chose a strange vehicle after FRIENDS to shake up her image with this series. Most viewers will find themselves either highly amused or disgusted by this series, which may explain the 50% ratings drop.
C'mon folks, let's hear a few good weekend entertainment recommendations.
