Congratulations to Vinnie Del Negro who has just been named as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. Del Negro played for Jim Valvano at NC State and was in one of my classes there. My boyfriend and I studied with him a time or two, but my most vivid memory is of sharing an umbrella with Vinnie following one class when a sudden downpour caught him without an umbrella. I remember it because I am about 5'1" and when you share an umbrella with someone who is almost two feet taller than you, the umbrella does not do you much good. I remember getting fairly soaked (although my head did stay mostly dry). I think about it occasionally when I share an umbrella with my kids. I am always sure to hold the umbrella just above their heads, rather than mine.
Del Negro has played for the NBA and has been an on-air analyst, but has not coached. It will be interesting to see how he does. Congrats and best wishes, Vinnie.
