This is a longer, more expansive take on the man-on-the-street interviews Howard Stern played where Obama supporters were asked why they liked him so much, and then were asked specifically if it was because of his stand against abortion, etc. It was hilarious to hear most of them say, when prompted, that they supported Obama because he was for the surge in Iraq and against abortion. It is really sad though that people can be so stupid. Check out the How Obama Got Elected site to read more about their project, which includes a poll they commissioned showing similar results.
What is really frustrating to me is that we knew the media would not inform the electorate (they never do) and that always leaves it to Republican candidates to do it. McCain's campaign should have done a better job getting the facts out there. When we could not even tie the Democrat-controlled Congress to their 13 percent or so approval ratings there was no doubt we would lose. It infuriates me that McCain didn't try to hold Dems accountable in the subprime mortgage mess in any real way, or to tie them to anything else the incredibly unpopular Congress did.
People will now at least realize who is in charge, but that just means the media will now report the glass half full version of every news story. At least maybe the the U.S. military will now get a bit of attention and credit for their incredible work -- now that there is no way media attention to them will help Republicans.
As glad as I am to see efforts like the one at How Obama Got Elected, this was needed before the election. I kept wondering where the "Harry and Louise" ads were on the bailout and on the Democrats' role in the subprime mortgage mess. It is inexcusable that Republicans lost when they had so much ammunition they could have used, but for some inexplicable reason decided to hold back. I know they were outspent by hundreds of millions of dollars and had the entire news media actively campaigning for the other side, but they didn't lose by much, even with all that against them. Not only did the media's efforts to keep the electorate stupid help elect Obama, but the Republicans ineptitude was to blame as well. Sadly, so far, I am not seeing any indication yet that things will be different in 2010 or 2012.

Why was Obama elected? Two words. Sarah Palin. For those who voted for John McCain the number four reason was Sarah Palin. For those who considered John McCain but ended up voting for Barack Obama the number one reason was Sarah Palin. In Rasmussen's exit poll the very favorable minus the very unfavorable was:
Obama +13
McCain +6
Biden +1
Palin -10
Independents had a 57% unfavorable for Palin. Moderates had a 67% unfavorable with 52% very unfavorable. All the attacks were backfiring with independents and moderates which were McCain's strong suit and that's why Palin's handlers were desperately trying to get her to shut up. Sarah Palin was only a net positive for those with less than a college degree and the more the education the more negatively she was viewed.
Obama picked up 7% amongst evangelical voters over Kerry. What's interesting is the difference in what was important to evangelical Obama supporters vs. evangelical McCain supporters.
First the priorities of the McCain Evangelicals:
1. Abortion
2. Cleaning Up Government
3. Fighting Islamic Radicalism
4. Gay Marriage
5. The Economy
6. The Iraq War
7. Illegal Immigration
8. Access to Health Care
9. Reducing Poverty
10. The Environment
Now the Obama Evangelicals:
1. The Economy
2. The Iraq War
3. Reducing Poverty
4. The Environment
5. Cleaning Up Government
6. Access to Health Care
7. Gay Marriage
8. Abortion
9. Fighting Islamic Radicalism
10. Illegal Immigration
The American people prioritized in four clusters. The biggest "cluster" was -- surprise, surprise -- the economy at 40%. The next cluster at around 7-9% was terrorism, health care, and the war in Iraq. The next cluster around 6% was government corruption and abortion. Dead last was illegal immigration.
One thing of note is the high priority of poverty and environment for the Obama evangelicals. This is not surprising since this is the hallmark of young evangelicals. Since this was not a choice on the surveys I've looked at it's hard to tell where that would fit in. The fact that the presumably older evangelicals treated these priorities dead last is interesting.
The McCain evangelicals are completely out of touch. What the economy as number 5 and after gay marriage and abortion? Illegal immigration more important than health care? Yeah, riiiight. It also explains the alternate Universe with respect to Sarah Palin and we need to attack more rather than less. If conservatives and particularly religious conservatives don't get why Obama won it will be a long, long time before we get back in power.
